Inspired by the South African struggle against apartheid, the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement is rooted in a century-long tradition of Palestinian civil and popular struggle for freedom, justice and human rights.
In 2005, in light of the failure of the UN and the international community to hold Israel accountable for its continuous impunity and violations of international law, and after one year of silence following the historic ruling of the International Court of Justice on the illegality of the Wall, Palestinian civil society appealed to citizens of the world to shoulder the moral responsibility to end complicity in Israel's violations of international law and Palestinian rights.
The BDS Call asserts the primacy of the right to self-determination and addresses the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people:
- To live free from Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem;
- To end Israel's system of institutionalized racial discrimination against its Palestinian citizens;
- For the Palestinian refugees and internally displaced, the great majority of the Palestinian people, to exercise their UN-sanctioned right to return to their homes of origin and to receive reparations.
SADAKA endorses the Palestinian call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel until such time as Israel complies with international law and upholds human rights. One of SADAKA’s key organizational aims is to promote and gain mainstream support throughout all sections of Irish society for the BDS campaign.
SADAKA’s BDS campaign also includes:
- Research based lobbying and advocacy on public procurement to exclude companies which profit from the Occupation and are complicit in human rights abuses;
- Evidence based lobbying which aims for the complete ban on illegal Israeli settlement products entering Ireland (See Settlement page).
SADAKA collaborates with trade unions, churches and other civil society organizations in Ireland, networks internationally and liaises with the Palestinian Boycott Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC) to contribute to the effective co-ordination and implementation of the global BDS campaign against Israel.
This page will be updated regularly with key resources and the latest boycott Israel success stories, both in Ireland and internationally.
