Between 11th and 14th July, Sadaka will host a series of meetings between Dr. Nabil Shaath and senior politicians and opinion formers with the objective of persuading the Government to vote for UN membership for a Palestinian state in September 2011

Commissioner of International Relations of Fatah, Senior Palestinian Negotiator

 

Dr. Nabil Shaath is Commissioner of International Relations with Fatah and is a senior PLO and Palestinian Authority negotiator.   He has been a member of the Central Committee of Fatah since 1989.  Today, he is Head of the Political Committee of its General Congress and editor of its Political Programme. From 1995 to 2005, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Planning and International Co-operation, Minister of Information and from 2005 to 2006, Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Prime Minister.

Dr. Shaath was a member of the Palestinian delegation to the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference and participated in negotiations with Israel at Wye River, Camp David, Taba, Annapolis, Oslo and Washington.  Between 1992 and 1995, he was the PLO’s Chief Negotiator with Israel.

Dr. Shaath headed the first PLO delegation to the UN and accompanied President Yasser Arafat during his famous 1974 speech at the UN General Assembly.  He has represented Palestine in many world conferences including the World Economic Forum.

Prior to commencing a fulltime career in politics in 1969, Dr. Shaath taught Finance and Economics at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States from 1961-1965.  He obtained two doctorates, one in law and the other in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. He later taught at the Universities of Cairo, Alexandria and Beirut.

Nabil Shaath was born in 1938 in Safad, Palestine in 1938 and is married with two sons and two daughters.
